Sketching Practice: Drawing the Full Body

One challenge I’ve always faced is drawing a full body on one page. I used to end up having to cut off his head or feet if I wanted to keep it all proportional.

Tips for Drawing a Full Body

Some tips I can share? They’re pretty basic. Mark off where you want the top and the bottom of the sketch to start and end. Sketch it out lightly so it fits between the lines you indicated.

Drawing from Inspiration: Hugo Pratt

There’s a beautiful water color illustration of Corto Maltese by Hugo Pratt that I’ve always admired. I even bought a poster of it! After going to the Angoulême International Comics Festival in January, I was inspired.

My version using my character Nomad

When I got home, I pulled out my sketchbook and tried drawing a full body sketching using my sci-fi character Nomad. If you see something that inspires you, draw it! Make it your own and ask yourself – what makes this good? Why do I like it so much? Then try to replicate WHY it’s good.
